Restoration of Aries Avenue greenbelt kicks off

SUNDOWNER – Sundowners come together to rehabilitate Aries Avenue greenbelt.

SUNDOWNER – The Sundowner community has come together to rehabilitate the greenbelt along Aries Avenue where the river leads to Golden Harvest Park.

Resident Brendan Turner had the idea to clean up the park on Aries Avenue because he was inspired by its potential. Turner has been a resident in the area since 2012 and has seen the park and riverbank deteriorate over the years. It was then that he collaborated with Bongani Zungu, an ecologist at City Parks and Ward 134 councillor Wendy Alexander for the community project.

The process began with a site meeting, then formulating a plan as to how the greenbelt would be restored and a presentation to community members who were interested in the project at Boskruin Village.

“The aim is to rehabilitate the greenbelt in a few years,” said Turner. Alexander was grateful to see about 50 Sundowner residents come out on the day and invest in their community.

The first part of the rehabilitation was the eradication of alien plants and replacing them with indigenous flora.

The team wanted to extend their gratitude to Pick n Pay Summerfield, Chas Everitt Property and Rawson’s Property for their contributions on the day.
