WATCH: 9-year-old scores double century

RANDPARK RIDGE – Kyle Henenne aims for the Proteas, coach believes he will make it.

Scoring a double century in cricket is a sensational feat. It is even more amazing if you are a nine-year-old playing in a 25-over club match.

Randpark Ridge resident, Kyle Henenne (9) scored a whopping 243 runs not-out for Randburg Cricket Club against the Western Warriors in such a game.

This innings came off only 83 balls and included 22 sixes and 23 fours.

“It felt amazing,” he told the Randburg Sun. “I was quite surprised I only faced 83 balls and got that many runs.”

This is the cherry on top of the cake of an amazing start to the season for Kyle, because he scored three centuries before this, including his previous best of 171 of 54 balls against USC Sunninghill.

The left-handed batsman has also found some success with his right-arm pace bowling, taking a few wickets too.

“Some of the things I like about cricket is you play as a team. Like if you take a catch, everyone comes and you can celebrate together and they always cheer you on.”

When batting he also enjoys judging whether a ball is bad enough to hit or if it is a good ball, in which case Kyle respects them.

“I think I am going to play for 20 or 30 years on. I am definitely going to play for South Africa.”

Kyle already plays indoor cricket for the western Gauteng team and was ranked second at this year’s inter-provincial tournament.

The youngster has played cricket for just two years, and thanked Randburg Cricket Club and his private coaches from Knights Cricket Academy and The Sports Network for their support.

Adrian Fourie of Knights Cricket Academy said, “Kyle’s strength as a batsmen is his ability to pick up a ball quickly and smash it, to be honest. He has always been able to hit the ball really hard. We improved his mental game and added shots to his selection.”

The proud coach added that Kyle used to put too much pressure on himself but has matured as a player and person.

He said Kyle plays beyond his years and will soon be able to walk into Gauteng’s U11 team, and one day be able to play for South Africa or play professionally overseas, if he keeps working on his mental game. After his double century, Black Widow sponsored Kyle a whole new set of cricket gear.
