Ski the slopes of Ferndale

FERNDALE – Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood donned some training skis to try his hand at skiing at Ferndale's Ski Deck.

Can you imagine the thrill of the alpine winds blowing through your hair as you ski the slopes of Mont Blanc on your lavish winter holiday in the Swiss Alps? Well, what about having a similar experience feeling 32-degree summer heat as you ski the slopes in Ferndale?

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood is continuing to highlight the uniqueness of business in his ward and this time, he donned some training skis to try his hand at skiing at Ferndale’s Ski Deck.

The Ski Deck is located at 74 Bond Street has been operational since 1983 and thousands of Randburg residents have honed their skills in skiing and snowboarding, without having to travel thousands of kilometres to do so.

The owner Lew Campbell hails from New Zealand, where he learnt his expert skills before moving to South Africa in the 1980s.

Campbell said, “Whether you are 10 years old or 80, and have never seen a pair of skis in your life, we offer beginners a bar for support allowing you to get a safe and secure start to master the basic manoeuvres. Our ski instructors are always within arm’s reach.”

The deck itself resembles an infinitely long snowy treadmill made with a high-quality material similar to Astroturf with water sprayed on it to make it slippery.

Equipment is no worry, as the Ski Deck has plenty of gear on offer for rental during training sessions, as well as a full shop with high-quality gear for you to purchase before a trip to experience the real thing.

For little ones, the Ski Deck makes the perfect place for a fun party, offering bum-boarding on the deck and water slides on the ground.

Wood added, “So many people may be interested in learning a skill like this, but never realised they could do so almost in their backyard.

“We have so many different and exiting businesses that people have never heard or even thought of before, and in my engagement with our community, I have found that there are so many. We really are a ward of many talents.”
