Bags of Kindness in full effect
LINDEN – Get involved by donating items to a good cause.
Kindness Like Confetti is a non-profit organisation founded in 2014. Since then the organisation has gone from strength to strength, with the aim to spread their message of universal kindness. Dignity bags were one way the organisation has set out to aid community members in need.
Dignity bags have been scheduled for delivery to the SAPS Victim Support Units through the Community Police Forums and other victim support organisations.
The SAPS Victim Support Units were established after it became apparent that survivors of crime required support to assist them during their time of trauma, especially after violent armed robberies, rape, fatal vehicle accidents, suicides, and more.
Sexual violence has occurred frequently in our society, and they help survivors to regain some of their dignity. They provide a ‘dignity pack’ to survivors which contain some personal items such as clean underwear, toothbrush and toothpaste,
They also have conceptualised pamper bags for less severe crime, something to make survivors look nice, smell nice, and generally help them regain their feeling of self-worth. These bags would typically contain a cosmetic gift pack, lotion, and a personalised gift card.
For the children that are so often caught up in crime scenes, the pamper bags have been equipped with a bag with a colouring book, crayons, and some sweets.
The units are run by volunteers only who see themselves as ’emotional medics’ holding hands with the victims to see them through the incident, and reduce trauma. They are wholly dependent on funding and sponsorship.
The ladies bags consist of:
- Zip-closing handbag (new or used in good condition)
- Pretty scarf
- Flannel receiving a blanket
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Pocket pack of tissues
- Brush or comb
- Hair tie
- Hand cream
- Unscented soap
- Pair of cotton panties
- 250ml water
- Energy snack
- Petroleum jelly
- Facecloth
- Sanitary pads
- Pen
- Notebook
The children’s bag consists of :
- A drawstring bag or similar
- Small toy or teddy
- Colouring-in book
- Crayons
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Flannel receiving blanket
- Panties / underpants
- Facecloth
- Mild soap
- Lip balm
