Man sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery

BORDEAUX – Police officers were met by a security guard who had apprehended one of the suspects at the scene.

A 22-year-old man was recently sentenced to effective 15-year imprisonment by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court for robbery.

According to Captain Makgowanyana Maja of the Randburg Police Station, the police received a complaint at about 1.16am on 26 December last year of an armed robbery in progress on Maxwell Avenue in Bordeaux. When officers arrived at the scene, they were met by a security guard who had apprehended one of the suspects. “He handed over the scene to the officers for preliminary investigations.”

Maja explained that the complainant said the suspects hit him with an unknown object on the back of his head and he fell down. “The suspects then robbed him of his cell phone and clothing.”

The clothing was found in the possession of the accused while the other suspect got away with the cell phone. “The arrested suspect was then detained and further investigations continued as well as collection of more evidential material to support the matter at court.”

The accused was ultimately found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances, convicted to 15 years’ imprisonment and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
