More than a beauty pageant

KYA SAND – Director of Miss Earth South Africa sheds some light on the competition.

The Miss Earth finalists made their way from the South of Johannesburg to Thorn Tree Academy in Kya Sand for a good cause on 30 August.

The leadership programme representatives were accompanied by the director of Miss Earth South Africa, Ella Bella Leite who shared a few words about the programme. Leite described Miss Earth as a six-month leadership programme which has sought to ’empower young women to become environmental ambassadors’. Women aged 18 to 28 from different backgrounds and appearances are welcome to join the programme.

Leite explained that the name of the leadership programme often misleads the public as the competition is not a pageant at all. She jokingly added, “We should have maybe called ourselves ‘earth warriors’ because it is about going out there and inspiring active citizenship.”

The national competition was something which has made strides to educate young women about the environment and how they can affect positive change. Entrants are encouraged to enter and view Miss Earth as an opportunity to learn and engage with communities which are beneficial to the community and surrounds. She explained that since one of the competitions pillars is education, it made sense for Miss Earth to add more greenery to the Kya Sand school.

“Possessions come and go, so it’s important to develop the person.”

Leite encouraged young women to enter the programme which has planned to open for entrants in November or December of this year, entries close in March next year.
