Thorn Tree Academy goes green

KYA SAND – Miss Earth finalists plant 10 trees at Thorn Tree Academy in honour of Arbour Week.

On 30 August, Miss Earth South Africa finalists L’Oreal Magro and Michaela Kupsamy planted 10 trees at Thorn Tree Academy in honour of National Arbour Week.

National Arbour Week is celebrated from 1 to 7 September every year.

The spring sunshine appeared early to welcome the new trees and the school’s guests.

The learners at Thorn Tree greeted their visitors with warm waist-high hugs, who arrived baring gifts. Thorn Tree Academy has provided education for children from grades R to 3 since 2016. The non-profit private school was started as part of the Life Tree staple which was founded in 2007.

Director of Miss Earth South Africa Ella Bella Leite was also in attendance and enthused that one could not separate ‘people from planet’. Leite heard about the school through an article published in Randburg Sun a few months ago, and thought to reach out for Mandela Day this year. With National Arbour Day on the horizon, this was another chance for the school and Miss Earth South Africa to come together. Leite took this opportunity to elaborate on the Miss Earth programme which has prioritised ‘inspiring active citizenship’.

CEO of Life Tree Carla Kemp was grateful that two finalists from the six-month leadership programme had made their way to the school. The donation was a group effort where the trees and compost were donated by Turfnet Compost and Landscaping and Servest South Africa.
