Lianne Bantjes is passionate about literacy and learning

BORDEAUX – Lianne Bantjes is a reading therapy and literacy support tutor with a passion for education.

Lianne Bantjes is passionate about education and has done everything to further the literacy mission.

This school teacher turned private tutor has returned to the shores of sunny South Africa after she left to teach in South Korea. She said that the few years spent overseas helped her gain perspective about the country’s education system.

The increased number of youth unemployment has led to an increase in graduates travelling elsewhere for work. In the first quarter of the year, the number of unemployed graduates has increased by 11.4 per cent in comparison to last year, according to Statistics South Africa.

Throughout the 11 years Bantjes spent in South Korea, she gained a wealth of knowledge. Once back in South Africa, she became a primary school teacher where she felt that the schooling environment reduced her love of teaching. The reading therapy and literacy support tutor has subsequently opened her own private English tutoring service and teaches in Randburg, Sandton and surrounds.

Bantjes’s love for education was heightened when she went to South Korea and experienced the Asian country’s schooling system which she said stands in counterpart to South Africa. The postgraduate certificate in education graduate expressed that the standard of education is more demanding on children in South Korea, however, this highlighted the capabilities of children at a young age.

Bantjes has taught both children and adults and identified the perks of reading therapy as the following:

  • Increased chances of other subject marks improving
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Development of self-esteem
  • The movement of the individual from learning to read to reading to learn
  • Reading becomes enjoyable rather than a chore and the person now reads for pleasure
  • School work and homework is completed faster and with greater independence
  • Learners experienced greater success and are therefore motivated to study further
  • Learners coped better in high school and with the demands of tertiary education.
