MMC plants vegetables for Mandela Day

COSMO CITY – MMC for Finance Funzela Ngobeni helped plant a vegetable garden on Mandela Day.

MMC for Finance Funzela Ngobeni joined the children of Trinity Day Care in Cosmo City to help them plant a vegetable garden for Mandela Day on 18 July.

The children and teachers greeted the MMC with their own songs and sang the National Anthem in honour of Madiba, before getting their hands dirty to plant the vegetables.

Ngobeni said, “It is such an honour to spend Nelson Mandela Day with the little ones. I am a child of Cosmo City, and I have lived and worked with this community for a really long time.

“We all know how Mandela felt about children and creating a better future for them, and I felt that it is important to highlight the Early Childhood Development Programme that we have in the City.”

A number of other City officials joined the MMC on the day.

Ngobeni continued, “Daycares and preschools always face challenges in compliance, so that is why I have asked officials from relevant departments to join me today as an opportunity to interact with those on the ground, interact with the kids, and a teaching opportunity about the environment.

“We are going to teach the kids how to plant and grow their own food, and this will be an ongoing engagement with this school and others in the area and across the city.”

Ward 100 councillor Mapula Mosito said, “It is so important for the MMC to visit our community on a special day like Mandela Day as he comes from Cosmo City and he would like to give back in this initiative. We hope to see the MMC and other City officials joining us in various community initiatives in the future.”
