Being a hawker is not a bad choice

RANDBURG – Bhekimpilo Moyo believes that being a street vendor who sells vegetables and fruits is a good start to a bigger opportunity.


Randburg hawker Bhekimpilo Moyo who was born and raised in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe shared his story about being a street vendor.

He has been selling vegetables and fruit since 2008.

Moyo said he lived in Cosmo City and travelled to Randburg on a daily basis to run his business from 7am to 9pm.

According to Moyo he makes about R180 per day and some of the money he uses to support his two children back at home.

He said in his line of business there was a lot of competition since he was not the only person selling in the area. Before he became a hawker, Moyo owned a fibreglass company and manufactured canopies and car bumpers.

“I dropped the job since it needed too much capital and I did not have the money, that is why I moved to selling fruit and vegetables.”

He added that he did not have a choice since there were no jobs and he needed to provide for his family.

Moyo advised that if anyone was sitting at home doing nothing and they had any responsibility, they needed do something that they were good at so that they could survive.
