Good Samaritan offers helping hand

PRAEGVILLE – Good Samaritan Tebogo Molele steps in to help a stranded 14-year old and proves that ubuntu is not dead on the tarred streets of Johannesburg.

Tebogo Molele sits serenely with his fingers interlocked in front of him between gestures. The afternoon sun remains radiant through the large glass windows of the restaurant. Molele is the Good Samaritan who took in 14-year old Nstiyeni Agreement Muthego when he was stranded outside KFC along Malibongwe Drive after a soccer match on a damp Tuesday evening.

Molele is employed at Nandos along Malibongwe Drive and took in Muthego due to a traumatising and life-changing occurrence which shaped the way he views the City of Gold. Molele hails from the Limpopo province and made his way to Johannesburg to pursue his studies in information technology at the beginning of 2016. The second born of five had funding and acceptance to study towards his degree, although he was unable to find accommodation and this served as a barrier to fulfilling his tertiary studies.

At the end of 2016, after moving to Cosmo City from the Johannesburg CBD, Molele had a run in with a criminal which changed the way he felt about the city forever. After meeting up with a friend from back home and deciding to play video games at his Cosmo City home, both men were cornered by a man with a gun who subsequently shot Molele in his right eye. The man did not take anything material from his victim. This act of unwarranted cruelty encouraged persistent fear in the heart of the young man, after only a few months of having moved to a new city. Molele stated that the boy’s predicament was, ‘touching’ because he was ‘a young boy’.

When Molele saw a frightened Muthego surrounded by concerned members of the community with midnight fast approaching, he was asked by one of his co-workers to take the teenager home with him. Molele then spoke to his manager at the restaurant and with her go-ahead, took Muthego home with him. “We had white bread and black coffee for dinner… I did not ask him too many questions since he was already scared.” Molele helped Muthego find a taxi home to Meadowlands in the morning.
