Witness young sporting glory at the 36th Saints Sports Festival

LYME PARK – St Stithians College will be hosting their 36th Sports Festival.

It’s that time of the year again where St Stithians College will be hosting their 36th instalment of the action-packed St Stithians Sports Festival.

Promising to be even bigger and better than last year, 25 schools from across the country will descend on the sports fields of the college, which claims to be the country’s biggest school sports festival.

Over 2 400 young athletes will participate in multiple sporting codes, including rugby, netball, football, hockey, tennis, squash and cross-country running.

The school’s Annie Fyfe-Hitchings said, “In just nine years, the Prep Festival has grown from six participating schools competing in only rugby, to over 25 schools participating in rugby, netball, and tennis – and this year, we add squash.

“We are happy to see 19 schools for rugby, 13 schools for netball, and 13 schools for boys and girls tennis and five schools for our newest sporting code, squash, all participating in a fun-filled three days of school sport.”

Head of the St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory Jakes Fredericks said, “The aim of our festival is to provide students with the opportunity to develop their sports skills, form new friendships but, most importantly, to learn to play sport in the true spirit of the game. In order to achieve this goal, we require three critical components: Supportive parents, passionate staff, and most importantly enthusiastic students. Our festival over the last few years has provided us with bucket loads of these and I am positive that this year will be no different.”

Head of the St Stithians Girls’ Preparatory Celeste Gilardi said, “Our girls, staff, and parents are looking forward to hosting our Prep Festival. The girls are very excited to be part of this festival and have worked hard to secure their places in the various teams. Sport is a wonderful vehicle for the players to come together to forge new friendships based on a mutual love of sport.”

Besides being a showcase of a great sport, the Saints Prep Festival will offer exciting food and entertainment options for families and visitors.

Visitors are invited to partake in fun activities such as dance and slime-making workshops that will fill the time between matches. Parents can relax in a cocktail bar, the Old Stithian Association beer tent, or the chill zone where neck and shoulder massages will be available.

There will also be a wide range of food vendors and market stalls for a bit of shopping.

The executive head of St Stithians College Tim Nuttall said, “The Saints Sports Festival can only happen through many, many people and organisations pulling together in one team. I say a warm thank to our staff and parent organisers and volunteers, to our sponsors and particularly our title sponsor Standard Bank, and to our suppliers and service providers who combine to create this spectacle.”

The festival will take place from 11 to 13 April at St Stithians College in Bryanston.
