Old Parks wants you

BORDEAUX – Calling all cricketers, Old Parks has a lot to offer you.

The Old Parktonian Sports Club is looking to grow its already-strong cricket section.

The club in Bordeaux has formed 50 years ago by cricketers said chairperson of the cricket section, Doug Neilson.

Currently, Old Parks has one Saturday and three Sunday senior teams playing in the Central Gauteng Lions leagues.

But the section’s real depth is with the juniors.

“We have the biggest junior cricket section in Gauteng with over 190 juniors,” said Neilson.

“We have 15 qualified coaches headed by myself.”

Neilson encouraged all young cricketers between the ages of five and 13 to join Old Parks and experience its expert coaching.

Furthermore, the senior section is also always looking for players 16 years old and up.

“We would like to grow our cricket membership and are very fortunate to have the expert services of Dave Nosworthy, a very well-known international coach who is always available to the club.”

Neilson himself played for Transvaal from 1972–83. The Transvaal team was known as the Mean Machine during the 70s and 80s and dominated South African cricket with the likes of Jimmy Cook, Graeme Pollock, Clive Rice, Ray Jennings and Peter May.

Old Parks also caters for hockey, soccer, bowls and cycling sections. A whopping 80 per cent of its members are aged 25 and under.

Other than all these sports, the club’s excellent restaurant will also give you a reason to keep coming back, Neilson added.
