Victim burned in apparent mob justice incident

COSMO CITY – Police are appealing for information on a suspected mob justice incident.

COSMO CITY – The body of an unknown male was found burned near Lilongwe Street in a suspected mob justice incident on 6 March.

According to Honeydew Police Station spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan, the victim was approximately 25 years old and is yet to be identified.

Muthan said, “The victim was found with a burning tyre around his neck. He had various injuries on his body and he was probably a victim of mob justice.”

He added that the victim was found lying face up, dressed only in underpants, and was proclaimed dead on the scene.

“There were no witnesses to the event, and we have no further information as yet. All police role players have been informed, and the case is under investigation.”

The Randburg Sun reported on a similar incident that happened in the Zandspruit informal settlement on 2 March in the article titled Murder victim burned [Week ending 8 March], where the body of a man was found burned from the waist up. Regarding that incident, Muthan said, “The victim’s face was totally burned beyond recognition. When investigating, we made inquiries around the area without any success… Unfortunately, nobody knows what caused the incident and the victim cannot be identified yet.”

Police are appealing for information on both incidents.
