Local swimmer, Karusha Moodley will swim her eighth Midmar Mile in aid of the fight against cancer.

The Randpark Ridge resident has committed to swimming eight miles (eight laps of Midmar Dam in KwaZulu-Natal) under the banner of PinkDrive.

Moodley will swim four miles (6.4km) on 9 February and the other four on the following day.

She has appealed to the community to support her swims with monetary donations for each mile.

“PinkDrive’s aim is to make a meaningful contribution towards preventing as many people as possible from succumbing to breast, cervical, prostate and testicular cancer,” Moodley said.

“The focus is on people who do not have access to reasonable care for these conditions.”

According to its own website, PinkDrive describes itself as a health sector non-governmental organisation that aims to help detect and treat cancer early, for patients who do not have reasonable access to care or who live in areas where health services do not reach.

Moodley said her own family had lost loved ones to cancer, and she hoped her fundraising drive could help others dealing with cancer.

“It is said that a ‘kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal’.

“Your contribution will make a difference and give hope and healing to patients diagnosed with cancer.”
