A stop street to stop Ferndale accidents

FERNDALE – With the help of the local ward councillor and the JRA, a local residents association has been successful at placing a new stop street in Ferndale.

A brand new four-way stop street has been placed at the corner of Cypress and Bath avenues, with an aim to curb the number of accidents at the intersection that have occurred in the past.

Chairperson of the Bryanfern Residents Association, Bronweyn Craig said, “This has been a notoriously dangerous intersection and we have had many vehicles crashing through the property walls on it. On a weekly basis, you can hear screeching tires and hooters, so for pedestrians and cyclists, it became very dangerous.”

The residents association approached Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood to help with the approval from the Johannesburg Road Association for a safer four-way stop street with new lines.

Wood said, “This intersection has been a bone of contention for a long time. If you look at the original lines of the stop street, it used to be further back so that when people approached the stop street, they had to creep into the intersection, causing major hassles.

“It was also a two-way stop where people would go through it at a high speed. It is also going to take time for people to realise that there is a new stop street at this intersection as they have been used to the two-way stop, and I encourage all driver to take note of it when approaching it.

“It has taken time as the JRA has a huge backlog of projects at the moment, but a week or so back they were able to put up new signs and repaint the lines.”

Craig added, “It has taken almost a year and a half to achieve this, and we are happy that it has finally been done. It is good as a residents association to be on top of things and keep communities safe. It is also great to work so closely with our ward councillor to achieve things like this one step at a time.”
