Ann Harding Home celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities

NORTHWOLD – International Day of Persons with Disabilities was celebrated at the Ann Harding Cheshire Home.

The Ann Harding Cheshire Home celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a fun range of interactive activates for invited guests and residents on 3 December.

Everyone at the event had connected with the Ann Harding Cheshire Home in some way. That includes donors, volunteers, the family of residents, and of course, the residents themselves.

The Ann Harding Cheshire Home’s Jackie Kyle said, “Today is a day to have a lot of fun, and to thank those who have helped the home throughout the year, and to give a little bit of an insight into the world of disability.

“We’re going to get really silly and play some kids games, but those who are able-bodied will see just how difficult it is to play them with a disability.”

Various games including wheelchair races, slalom, pin the tail on the donkey and mouth writing, all included some aspect of disability for able-bodied people to experience.

Examples included being blindfolded, having your hands tied behind your back, and using a wheelchair.

Kyle said, “None of us could ever understand what it is like to live with a disability unless you are in that situation, but these games are intended to give a little bit of insight into it.”

Since 1992, International Day of Persons with Disabilities has been observed annually on 3 December around the world.

The theme for this year’s day is empowering persons with disabilities, and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.

This theme focuses on the empowerment process for people with disabilities. Kindly show your love and respect for all people with disabilities, so that they can be empowered.

“We can all agree that we have a long way to go in our country to ensure inclusiveness and equality for people with disabilities, but I really think that we are moving in the right direction, and by following international trends, we will all get there sooner. It is a team effort, and we all need to work together,” Kyle said.
