Tip-off leads to unlicensed firearm arrest in Zandspruit

HONEYDEW – A tip-off lead to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of an unlicensed firearm.

The Honeydew police have successfully arrested two suspects who were in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Zandspruit.

According to Honeydew Police Station spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan, a registered informant reported that a Zandspruit shop owner was in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Muthan said, “According to the source, the shop owner shot at a ‘nyaope boy’ who was trying to rob the shop. The source asked the shop owner why he shot at the person, and the shop owner replied that he just wanted to scare him off.”

On 20 November, the informant pointed out the shop to the investigating officer, confirming that the suspect was inside the shop.

“The information liaised with Honeydew Saps Crime Prevention members and an intelligence-driven operation was launched at about 11pm,” said Muthan.

The shop inside the Mbele Section of Zandspruit was visited by the police and the suspect was found inside the shop. The suspect denied having a firearm.

“The shop was searched and a Z88 9mm police-issue pistol, one magazine and 12 live rounds of ammunition were found inside the deep freezer where the cool drink is kept.

The firearm was cocked, safety off and the hammer back.

“According to the suspect, he bought the firearm about six months back from unknown males in Zandspruit.”

Two suspects were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and were detained at the Honeydew Police Station.
