Two suspects arrested in Ferndale

FERNDALE – The suspects were arrested after they had allegedly stolen a victim's phone in the CBD.

Two suspects between 24 and 26 years old appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court after the duo allegedly robbed a victim of a cell phone.

The suspects were remanded in custody. The victim was walking along Pretoria Avenue, in Ferndale at about 12pm on 19 October, talking on his cell phone, when the suspect allegedly grabbed his cell phone suddenly and ran to a waiting vehicle. The victim chased after the suspect and grabbed him, unfortunately, the suspect slipped through the victim’s hands and someone from the awaiting vehicle opened the door and the suspect jumped into the vehicle which then sped off.

The police officers, who were nearby and noticed what happened, gave chase to the vehicle and they managed to apprehend the two suspects in Bryanston. The cell phone was recovered.

Captain Makgowanyana Maja of Randburg Police Station said as much as the police are deploying more resources on the identified hotspots, where people are being targeted during peak hours and late at night, they still appeal to the community to work with them by applying precautionary measures all the time. “Working together we can win.”

Maja added communities are urged to report any suspicious vehicles/persons or circumstances to police immediately by calling 086 001 0111 or their sector vehicle numbers.
