Traffic calming measures underway on Blairgowrie Drive

BLAIRGOWRIE – Speed humps are being installed on Blairgowrie Drive to curb dangerous driving.

Following a petition submitted to the City of Johannesburg in 2013, the Johannesburg Roads Agency has committed to resolving this petition by installing traffic calming measures on Blairgowrie Drive between Gordon Avenue and Republic Road.

Speed humps are currently being installed on either side of End Street. Ward 102 councillor David Potter said, “Hopefully, this will be an engineering solution, versus an enforcement solution, to manage the speed at which road users use Blairgowrie Drive to ‘rat run’ through the suburb.”

The petition was signed by 27 residents of Blairgowrie and submitted to the City of Johannesburg by then resident Glen Chatterton.

Chatterton said, “My wife would struggle to sleep during the night with the noise caused by the huge amount of taxis and other speeding cars using our road to avoid the speed traps on Jan Smuts Avenue.

We were also concerned with this issue during the day, as there is a crèche and park on the road with plenty of children around.

“We thought something had to be done, so we petitioned with the entire neighbourhood to see if they felt the same, and submitted it to the city

“My wife was a bit annoyed that it took a bit of time to accomplish, but when we found out something has finally been done about the problem, we were over the moon.”

Ward 102 councillor David Potter stands on the corner of End Street and Blairgowrie Drive where traffic calming measures are being implemented.

According to Potter, some years ago the Johannesburg Roads Agency installed traffic calming on the same road between Gordon Avenue and Conrad Drive.

Potter added, “During the 2018/2019 Financial Year, the City has committed R10 million for the installation of traffic calming measures citywide.I welcome the installation of traffic calming in Ward 102, where it contributes to an increase in road safety.”

Residents are encouraged to follow the process as defined on the Johannesburg Roads Agency website should they wish to request City funded or privately funded traffic calming in their street or suburb.
