Akani ‘Prime’ Phuzi to fight for Pan Africa Cruiserweight title in Blairgowrie

LINDEN – Local boxer is ready to hit the big league in a Pan-Africa championship fight.

Akani ‘Prime’ Phuzi (34) is ready to fight for the vacant World Boxing Association Pan-African cruiserweight title.

The Gauteng cruiserweight champion who trains at Alan Toweel Boxing Gym in Linden, is in the main card fight at the Young Gladiators Part Seven event at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre on 2 September.

There will be six undercard fights before Phuzi’s fight, all of them between professional boxers.

Akani ‘Prime’ Phuzi hopes to one day be the best cruiserweight boxer in the world.

Phuzi has only fought professionally since June last year and has won all five of his fights. These include three knockout wins and one win on points.

He is up against Youssof Mwanda, who is more experienced and has been boxing professionally since 2008.

Mwanda has eight wins, one draw and two losses to his name, and he has never been knocked out.

“I am preparing to go the whole 12 rounds to get more professional experience,” Phuzi said.”I want to learn how to box professionally, and yes I also want to win every single round.”

His trainer, Alan Toweel said they will not underestimate Mwanda. “I have seen him [Mwanda] once and his stance is upright and he has a strong right hand,” he said.

“We are working on Akani’s defence because when you fight a hard puncher anything can happen.”

Akani ‘Prime’ Phuzi (34) is a relatively new to professional boxing and is undefeated thus far.

Phuzi, who lives in Joburg CBD, said he started boxing 13 years ago when he and his friends decided to try it out.

He added that he enjoyed the training, and now has dreams to win world titles and be the best boxer in the world in his weight division.

Young Gladiators Part Seven is promoted by Supreme Boxing Promotions.

The event starts at 1pm. Front-row seats cost R250, and all other seats are R150.

Bookings can be made through Toweel.
