A resident who does what he usually does, gets recognition for it

WINDSOR – Keeping community clean earns resident a grocery package

KwikSpar Windsor and the Windsor Action Group (Wag) rewarded a resident in Windsor for cleaning up around his home. This was part of a recent Wag initiative to get the community to be proud of the area and keep it clean.

Takunda Pande won a pack of groceries from KwikSpar after he sent a picture of himself cleaning up his surroundings to Wag and he was happy that he was selected as the winner.”I cleaned up outside the house and it was not a decision as such but it’s something I do every weekend because it has to be done,” said Ponde.

“We should be there to serve rather than be served. The great thing is that this time someone appreciated it but it should be natural.

“This is about creating a character, if you’re staying in a clean environment, it shows that you are respecting yourself. It creates a character for the area and if people know you are from Windsor East and it’s a clean area, they associate you with that.”

KwikSpar Windsor’s store manager Dwayne Andrews is happy to be part of the initiative along with Wag, that encourages the community to be proud of Windsor.

He has been in Windsor for 26 years and has seen how much the area has changed. “My father has been at this store for 38 years, so we have seen how Windsor changed, and the bad way it has changed, but there is more good here,” said Andrews.

“Our aim is to get rid of the bad and keep the good. We are actively involved in Windsor and we believe that the only way to see a difference is to be involved. If you attend the community meetings, you’ll hear that most people complain but not much action follows.”

Wag chairperson Tebogo Tshakane and Wag member Corman Olivier said it is a positive initiative to take care of your own surroundings.

“We as a community must take responsibility for where we live. A space that is dirty attracts diseases that could be avoided if we just clean up,” said Tshakane.

“It’s a good thing that Spar has become involved and the main purpose of Wag is to get the Windsor community to get together and know each other better. It is also to get them to take responsibility and ownership of their community in terms of cleanliness. We want to empower the community to clean up what is front of them,” said Olivier.
