The Grade 8s at Rand Park High School participated in the school’s annual tree-planting ceremony to coincide with Earth Day 2018 which was on 22 April.

Earth Day campaigns run globally every year to help raise public awareness for the need to conserve and protect our planet.

The planting of trees at Rand Park started three years ago as one of the school’s traditions.

Information is shared with the Grade 8s about mankind’s collective responsibility as citizens to take care of the planet and to protect it for future generations.

Tracy Workman-Davies, Grade 8 dean and deputy principal, believes that creating environmental awareness is an important part of the school’s educators’ mandate.

Workman-Davies said, “By planting trees with the Grade 8s, we encourage them to conserve and enhance the natural environment we find ourselves in and we teach them about leaving a living legacy.”

Each Grade 8 class has members of the representative council of learners, who took turns in preparing the trees and planting them.

Workman-Davies continued, “They will watch the trees grow as they go through high school, and will leave, knowing they have left a tangible legacy of their time at our school.”
