It can sometimes be stressful for parents and guardians out there to choose which big school their little one will go through. But Laerskool Unika made that choice much easier when they hosted an Open Day this weekend, 24 March at the school.

This was to allow parents who are interested in sending their children to the school or want to learn more about it, had the staff’s full attention.

Teachers were present at every corner as the sports fields were filled with various different stalls as parents were pulled to and fro by their children to have some fun.

Each stall represented different extracurricular activities the school is involved in such as Voortrekkers, gymnastics, golf, rugby, modelling and netball.

Head of Department for the Junior Phase Estie Pansegram said this year the Open Day was hosted on the fields to give the children a better opportunity to get to know the school.

“The children had a chance to visit some Grade R and Grade 1 classes to see how it will be like for them when they are at our school,” said Pansegram. “The children get a card from the registration stall and from thereon they must visit each stall and get a sticker after completing the activity at the stall. In the end, when they are done collecting the stickers, they will receive a present.”

One of the cornerstones of Laerskool Unika is its Unika Voortrekkers youth programme that teaches the children about leadership and history.

The organisation’s roots are deep in Christianity and this helps the children become more involved in the community.

The deputy leader of the Voortrekkers Northern South Africa, Tekkies Kotzé said it is important for the children to learn about who they are as well as learning about their heritage.

“We are closely involved with the children and the school but the most important thing is for the children to have fun in nature so we have a lot of camps. Here they also learn about surviving in nature,” said Kotzé.
