Fontainebleau dog survives Two-Step poisoning

FONTAINEBLEAU – After 1am, Benji went into Plant's room and woke her up, and it was then things started to go wrong.

It was a normal Saturday night for the Plant family, ready for bed when their Yorkshire terrier Benji, started barking outside.

The family leaves the door ajar so Benji can come in and out of the house in the evening. When the dog came back inside the house, Benji continued to bark.

Marquritha Plant called Benji into her room but he did not respond to her. After 1am, Benji went into Plant’s room and woke her up, and it was then things started to go wrong.

“I could immediately tell that he was not himself and we rushed him to the vet which was open at that time,” she said. “I knew he had been poisoned due to prior experiences so we also called the security company to inspect the yard for anything suspicious.”

The family returned home at 3am without Benji who had to stay at the vet. When Plant checked the yard, she noticed that Benji had vomited what looked like a piece of cold meat or minced meat.

When the sample was tested by the vet, they found the meat had Temik or Two-Step poison in it.

It’s a black or grey granular substance and is usually put in meat or bread by criminals targeting a home with pets in the yard. It paralyses the animal’s muscles and leads to a traumatic death.

Symptoms of poisoning are numerous, and include difficulty breathing, coughing up mucus, vomiting, convulsions and excessive salivation.

“We suspect that someone threw it over the wall so that the dog could eat it,” added Plant. “This poison is deadly not only to animals but humans too, it is dangerous. Benji is currently recovering at home.”

The family had not yet reported the incident to the police.
