Avenir Private School raises money for children living with cancer

RANDPARK RIDGE – Spreading the love one cupcake at a time.

Valentine’s Day is not only about showing affection and love to those closest to you, but it is also about spreading kindness and love to those you do not know.

At Avenir Private School this was reality that came to be one cupcake at a time.

Head of the department for the school, Laura Mawdsley said the school hosted a Party of Hope for kids living with cancer. This party managed to raise R2 745 for the non-profit organisation, Cupcakes of Hope.

For the day, mothers and teachers baked plain cupcakes and the children decorated them to their liking. Each child could order as many cupcakes as they wanted at R10 each.

Mawdsley said they chose Valentine’s Day because they wanted to spread love in any way they could to other children.

“We explained to our kids that we have to give love to people who are not expecting it,” Mawdsley said.

After they decorated the cupcakes, the children took cupcakes home to their families.

“They enjoyed the whole process of decorating and what is great is that they got to share this joy with other kids. Nice to see them opening up their hearts and they are looking forward to giving the money to the organisation.”

Through their efforts, Avenir Private School raises R2 745 for Cupcakes of Hope.

Mawdsley hoped the children would take home that Valentine’s Day is not the only day designated to give or receive love but rather that love can be given to the unsuspecting and still mean just as much.
