A yellow barrier has been placed over a sinkhole on Republic Road to notify road users of the danger.

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter said, “The sinkhole on Republic Road in Bordeaux has been escalated to the Johannesburg Roads Agency by my office. Various site inspections have taken place.”

Following the recent holiday season, the JRA depot staff have now returned from leave and are attending to the backlog of road defects, including a variety of sinkholes and other issues across Randburg and the city.

On 9 November last year, the City of Johannesburg reported a R170 billion infrastructure backlog.

Potter said, “I am hopeful that the JRA will open up the sinkhole, repair it as quickly as possible and reinstate the road, however, this depends on the extent of the damage under the road surface.”

Potter encouraged motorists to be patient, and slow down as they approach the area around the sinkhole.

Updates to follow from the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
