Sonneglans Spruit receives a clean-up

SONNEGLANS – A Re Sebetseng campaign continues in a joint initiative between Ward 101 and 134...

Every third Saturday of the month, communities and their ward councillors gather together to help clean areas in their community across Johannesburg as part of the A Re Sebeteng campaign.

On 20 January, a joint initiative between Ward 101 and 134 was held to clean up the areas surrounding the parks along the Sonneglans Spruit on President Fouche and Witdoring roads.

Volunteers Hlanganani Manganyi, Sibusiso Makgetha and Thabisile Mahlangu.

Ward councillors Dalu Cele and Wendy Alexander donned cleaning attire and equipped themselves with shovels, rakes and packets to lend a hand.

Alexander said, “What we are trying to do is engage our community in a great initiative to take control of our neighborhoods, to beautify them and get to know each other better.”

The ward councillors decided to focus on this area to help improve the environment and the natural watercourses.

The area is a considered a problem due to the high volume of car and foot traffic.

“A lot of the time our natural watercourses are forgotten areas as you can’t always see them.”

Cele said, “The spruit is very important area to preserve and due to the fact that the roads in the area are becoming busier, so does the pollution surrounding it.

“This initiative needs to take place every month and we encourage all to take part… It’s amazing how dirty one area can become in the space of a month.”

Alexander added, “The more people that take part in the initiative, the more people will learn how to better take care of the environment.”
