Electricity and crime on Kya Sand informal settlement agenda

KYA SAND – Kya Sand residents demand electricity and less crime during IDP feedback meeting.

Ward 115 councillor Matome Mafokwane held a very successful and engaging Integrated Development Plan feedback meeting on 16 November where many issues were discussed.

According to Mafokwane, the feedback session was a fruitful one as two main issues that have been affecting Kya Sand informal settlement were attended to. The first burning issue was the electrification of the informal settlement.

Mafokwane said, “Residents demand that the municipality provide electricity to households as a matter of urgency.”

He, along with Nico De Jager, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, said the City of Johannesburg has been approached by an international company with a proposal to supply electricity to Kya Sand informal settlement.

“The partnership between the City and the company is welcomed and we as a community will play our role to ensure it succeeds.”

The second topic which sparked robust conversation was that of high crime levels in and around the informal settlement.

“Police need to service communities with care and humility, they should not turn complaints away or dismiss them as rubbish.”

He added that every lead and tip-off needs to be followed up on properly and those that bring information to the police need to updated by the police with the progress of the case.

Mafokwane thanked all the residents present at the feedback meeting.

“The next step of this process is to ensure that the municipality delivers on the promise they made to these communities.”
