Taking pride in your city was on the lips of hundreds of volunteers that stormed the streets of Johannesburg this past weekend. The City of Johannesburg driven initiative saw Mayor Herman Mashaba encouraging citizens to take proactive measures in a monthly campaign aimed at bettering and cleaning the City.

The first edition of this initiative was on 30 September. In the suburb of Windsor East, which is known for criminal activity and derelict streets full of rubbish, about 50 residents took hours out of their Saturday to clean the streets.

Community members from as far as Northcliff, Bryanston and Windsor West picked up hundreds of bags of rubbish throughout the day. Many were armed with brooms, rakes, rubbish bags and gloves geared to ensure the suburb sparkled.

Ward 98 councillor Beverley Weweje stressed the importance that the volunteer programme is purely a city-driven idea. “The whole point is that community members come together too consciously participate in making their area cleaner, the response has been great from both local members and volunteers from other suburbs,” added Weweje.

The volunteer campaign will take place on the last Saturday of every month. Interested parties can collect Pikitup bags from their nearest depot.
