WINDSOR RENTAL BOYCOTT: Correct way to cut off water

WINDSOR EAST AND WEST – Many residents complain that they are paying too much money for water or that landlords cut their water illegally.

Johannesburg Water (JW) explains how and why a tenant’s water can be cut off.

The entity’s external communications officer, Eleanor Mavimbela said, “The City of Johannesburg issues pre-termination notices on accounts that are in arrears. After 14 working days, the City generates the cut-off file and remits it to JW for onwards execution.”

It is important to know that tenants have an avenue to dispute terminations or to arrange payment plans. Clients can visit the City’s walk-in centres for payment arrangements or fax proof of payment to the provided fax numbers on the disconnection card.

Mavimbela explained that an owner cannot turn off the water themselves but can apply for a cut-off via the City of Johannesburg, as long as they can prove ownership or have an eviction order.
Water meters also seem to be a thorn in the side of residents.

Mavimbela suggested that if someone’s water meter is not read properly, clients can call 086 056 2874 and log a call for such queries.
