Success brewing in the kitchen

ROBIN HILLS – 'Hospitality studies teach creativity and innovation.'

Learners who dare to embark on the hospitality studies journey at The King’s School Robin Hills will know that after each lesson with Petra Burger, there will be a spring in their step.

“This subject does something to learners. It makes them realise they are capable of creating,”

said Burger, who teaches the subject to high school learners.

During a recent visit, grade 12s were preparing desserts like chocolate fondant and Bavarian cream.

“We focus on making restaurant food with high numbers in mind. There is great interest in this subject (a 120 per cent improvement from last year) and great pride, especially in the uniforms,” Burger said.

These preparations focuses on skills development. The fun, and nerves, really start when the school hosts either their regular breakfast or restaurant evenings.

On 16 and 30 August, upon reservation, you can taste the learners’ skills for yourself. The four course meal will cost you R165 per person, R120 for learners and R80 for anyone under 12 years old.

But the future was not always as bright for hospitality studies learners. In 2008 learners could not use the marks they obtained from this subject towards university admission. Burger said this caused a negative perception that lasts till this day. “But this has changed. You can take this subject and it counts towards admission.”

By teaching her learners that ‘it’s about what you put on the plate’, Burger believes that the skills taught in hospitality studies will be used throughout a learner’s life.

“In grade 12, we teach learners to set up a small business plan for their own business within the industry. Every matriculant walks out of here with a proper business plan.

“And you learn the importance of time management.”
