An undercover operation by Metro police officers from the K9 Narcotics and Tactical Unit in Randburg on 8 June paid off when one suspected drug dealer was arrested.
Approaching his flat in Ferndale, officers – after intensive previous observation – attempted to buy drugs from the suspect. Conducting business as usual, the suspect brought the drugs forward.
He was immediately apprehended and his apartment searched where numerous bags of marijuana were found. The suspect was then taken to the Randburg Police Station.
Joining the unit was Public Safety MMC, Michael Sun and Ward 102 councillor, David Potter.
“It is evident and known that further drug dealing takes place in Randburg and surrounds. The Metro police’s K9 unit will continue their operations as and when possible, and are thanked for their efforts thus far,” Potter said.
“Further surveillance will continue in the area, possibly leading to more arrests,” Sun added.
The unit, relaunched with 60 officers late last year, has since yielded drug manufacturing chemicals worth a combined R9.5 million, affecting 597 arrests, recovering 100kg of drugs, 463 stolen or hijacked vehicles, 1 044 stolen items and 52 firearms.
Mayor Herman Mashaba has called the unit the ‘real heroes of our City’.
