A man was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court after he was found guilty on a charge of housebreaking and theft.
Vincent Peter was arrested by the Randburg police on 26 May last year, after they started investigating a break-in and theft.
Constable Norman Sekgobela and Sergeant Bennet Domola rushed to the crime scene in Van der Stel Street in Kensington B.
“They responded quickly and went to the security guard who informed them of what happened. They immediately gave a lookout for the vehicle involved and a description of the suspects,” said police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maja.
He said the two detectives immediately began searching for the suspect and managed to spot a vehicle fitting the description given.
“They tried to stop the vehicle but the driver accelerated and a chase ensued,” he said.

They managed to stop the vehicle on the corner of Grey and Abington streets. After searching the vehicle and the man, they recovered stolen jewellery taken from the house.
“As they revisited the scene, they also recovered the house breaking implements which were used to break into the premises. The television set which was also taken from the house was also recovered,” he said.
Maja said the suspect was immediately arrested and charged with housebreaking and theft, as well as possession of housebreaking implements.
“The case was assigned to Detective Constable Koketso Pudi who did a thorough investigation. The suspect was sentenced to an effective 12 years imprisonment for both charges,” he said.
The station management thanked all the members of the police, the security guard and the justice department for working tirelessly to ensure that the perpetrator was put behind bars.
“This will send a strong message to other perpetrators to not commit crime,” he said.
