A war against drugs begins with LDAC

RANDBURG CBD – The fight against drugs begins with the community and the Randburg LDAC.

The first ever launch of the Randburg Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) sees a bright future in the war against drugs.

The launch was a success with high visibility on 6 May in the Randburg CBD. Relevant stakeholders in partnership with the City of Johannesburg Social Development Department attended the launch. All attendees have the intention of spreading awareness around drug addiction, substance abuse and drug-related crimes.

Addiction comes in many shapes and forms.

Randburg Police Station commander, Brigadier Michelle Jones said, “This is our first opportunity to reach the community. We hope to get them involved in the fight against drugs and crime; it is our aim that the public will support us.”

She added that most often the soft targets are the youth. Jones spoke about the different programmes they will offer the youth such as skills development, which will be targeted towards schools.

Community members and shoppers learn about substance abuse.

Randburg Community Policing Forum’s Lance Porter seconded the need to focus their interaction with children from a young age.

“I feel like by starting the LDAC we will be able to pull the resources of multiple City departments to help us fight this war,” said Porter.

Hennie Oosthuizen, Randburg LDAC chairperson welcomes the community and says drugs will not be tolerated in Randburg.

Among the stakeholders present, James Donovan, house manager and programme facilitator of Help Addict, discussed how prevention is better than cure.

LDAC chairperson, Hennie Oosthuizen led proceeding and emphasised that drugs and drug dealers are not welcome in Randburg.

“Today we asked the community for their input on our business plan. It is only through community involvement that we can make an impact.”

Randburg Police’s Colonel Solly Mudau, Warrant Officer Collin Kgwale and Brigadier Michelle Jones make sure the community knows the police are against drug abuse.
