Randpark Golf Club’s new champs

RANDPARK RIDGE — The Randpark Golf Championship produced two new winners who will represent the club for the year.

The Randpark Golf Club‘s women and men’s club championships presented two new winners who will carry the flag of the tournament for the rest of the year.

Randpark Ridge resident Gary Baynham won the men’s A Division of the championships while Horizon View resident Jacqui Akers took the women’s A Division over the weekend 22–23 April.

After three years of putting his golf clubs away in favour of a career in motor mechanics, Baynham said that he was ecstatic to hold the winner’s cup at the end of the two-day tournament.

After an early tee-off on the first day, Baynham said that he made a few mistakes but brought it back nicely enough to end the day in the top 10, however, when the second day of the competition came around Baynham scored several birdies.

The two-time winner of the competition said that winning this tournament was a way for him to ease himself back into the game and he planned to spend the rest of the year representing the Randpark Golf Club.

“I am very intent on going professional and my main goal is to make the South African A team,” he said.

Jacqui Akers took the women’s A Division.

Another golf talent, Akers said that she had been playing for the past nine years after being roped into the sport by her brother and father.

She said that despite the game not being her best, she was glad to have won the tournament and pointed out that she had great fun on the greens.

“I made a few mistakes on my first day but was on the front line in the second day. My plan went very well and I was happy when I won the tournament.”

Akers added that she took home a R1 000 shopping voucher and a bag as part of her prize and indicated that despite the difficult course she looked forward to playing the rest of the year.
