Lighties shine for Randburg Bowls Club

BOSKRUIN – Johannesburg Bowls Association's U15 team shines at interprovincials.

The Randburg Bowls Club celebrated the success of three of their young bowlers after they competed in the Junior Interprovincial Bowls Tournament in Bloemfontein.

The tournament, between 4 and 7 April, attracted U15, U20 and U30 teams from all provinces.

The Johannesburg Bowls Association’s (JBA) U15 boys team won a silver medal at the tournament, having lost to Western Province in the final. Three of the four players in the team play for Randburg Bowls Club, while the fourth plays for Ferndale Bowls Club.

The team included Xavian Kramer, Lethabo Mathibela, and Matthew Wayne from Randburg, and Shayne Muller from Ferndale. Kramer, the skip, was the youngest skip in the tournament.

“We all played so well together, and were very excited to make the finals,” Kramer said. “I am looking forward to next year’s tournament, and if we carry on practising and listening to our coaches, we will win gold next year.”

Terry Turner, a driving force behind the development of junior bowls in JBA, said, ” I am so incredibly proud of each and every one of our youngsters, they all competed vigorously for the medals, and did our club and district proud. This U15 team that won silver will develop into a superstar team.”

Not to be outdone by the boys, Randburg also had three representatives in the U20 women’s side – Naledi Mokoena, Roslyn Tait and Boema Makgalmele. Ryan Smith from Randburg skipped the JBA U20 men’s team.

Former South African international bowler, Allan Gordon, who now spends his time coaching and mentoring new and junior bowlers said, “I am extremely excited about what we have accomplished – the talent, enthusiasm and competitiveness of the juniors are quite contagious.”
