UPDATE: NATIONAL SHUTDOWN – protesters still going strong
JOBURG – Residents still out on Beyers Naudé Drive in a protest against President Jacob Zuma.
It has been over five hours since protesters gathered on Beyers Naudé Drive above the Highway and numbers have dropped slightly compared to early hours of this morning.
Traffic is heavily congested from both directions and it is advisable to use alternative routes.
Peaceful protesters are raising their South African flags high and are calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down.
Different placards have been seen throughout the morning with some of them depicting the president as the former German leader Hitler while some of them read “The tribe has spoken” and “Zupta must fall.”
Protesters are stopping vehicles and get into song for about 2 minutes while the driver is hooting.
Once the motorist enjoys the show, they open the way for them to pass.
This has led to a heavy delay on Beyers Naude Drive from both directions.
JMPD officers are now diverting vehicles from the West to the Pretoria onramp on the highway.
