Police warn residents against reporting false cases

KENSINGTON B – A man has pleaded guilty after lying to the police about being robbed at gunpoint

Randburg police warned residents against reporting false information after Rasebotja Makhula (25) recently pleaded guilty to a charge of perjury in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court in Kensington B.

According to the Randburg police’s spokesperson, Captain Makgowanyana Maja, Makhula paid a visit to the police station on 1 December last year, and reported that he had been robbed at gunpoint.

“Makhula alleged that he was on his way to work when he was approached by a white vehicle with three occupants on the corner of Republic Road and Oak Avenue in Ferndale,” Maja said.

He pointed out, that Makhula further alleged that, when the vehicle stopped him on the side of the road, the driver of the vehicle aimed a gun at him and forced him to get inside the vehicle, which dropped him off in Brits.

Maja explained that Makhula alleged that he was forced to withdraw money from his accounts and that the suspects took his cellphone but left him with his SIM card.

Maja said that when Detective Sergeant Dennis Moodley began to investigate the matter he found that Makhula had lied under oath.

He further explained that Makhula was arrested a few weeks later after being tracked down by the detective investigating the case.

Maja added that Makhula pleaded guilty on the charge against him and was sentenced to a diversion programme that is aimed at rehabilitating the offender, whereby they do community service as their sentence.

“We are warning members of the public to stop reporting false cases as this wastes the police’s time as well as resources that could have been spent on other matters,” he concluded.
