Mintek supports Cansa

FERNDALE – Cansa receives more support as the employees of Mintek raise more than R36 000 for this great cause.

More than R36 000 was raised for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) by Mintek employees through the company’s shavathon, held at its offices in Ferndale on 3 March.

The employees paid between R50 and R100 to have their hair sprayed, shaved, a massage, boot shine or a photo in the photo booth.

Communications officer for Mintek, Elvis Tshweneyame pointed out that this year’s shavathon broke the company’s previous collection for Cansa.

The shavathon is held annually as part of Mintek’s Wellness Programme activities.

With 650 employees including scientists and engineers, Mintek, South Africa’s national mineral research organisation, were able to start collecting money in February.

“We do this every year as we realise there is still a lot of research that must be conducted in the field of cancer and even though the disease has not yet directly impacted us, we have had some of our staff members who had family members affected by cancer,” Tshweneyame said.

He added that it was important to support organisations such as Cansa because there was still so much research that had to be done in order to find a medical cure for such illnesses.

Manager for mineralogy, Nosi Nyamane said the day was dedicated to those who had survived the disease.

“We are trying to show that even though we don’t understand what cancer patients are going through, we do care,” Nyamane said.

One of Nyamane’s friends passed away due to a brain tumour several years ago and this prompted her to show support for others who are going through the same thing.
