Shaved, sprayed and donated

RANDPARK RIDGE – The Cansa shavathon saw many ponytails and colourful hair at Randridge Mall.

RANDPARK RIDGE – Shave, spray and donate was the theme of this year’s Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Shavathon on 25 February at Randridge Mall.

Flocks of people arrived either to have their hair sprayed or shaved in support of the 14th annual Cansa Shavathon.

The Honeydew Community Policing Forum team members shave, spray and donate in aid of Cansa.

Those who chose to spray paid a ‘bail-out-fee’ while the brave few chose to shave it all off.

Ponytails which were 20cm and longer were donated to making wigs for those fighting hair loss due to cancer treatment.

The Hot 91.9fm team broadcast live from the shavathon as well.

Wendy van der Walt, a floor manager, was proud and excited at the amazing turnout they received. She said, “The Hot 91.9 guys did a really amazing job today and they not only entertained the listeners and crowds but also helped spread the message.”

Many of the brave people who decided to shave their hair did it for very personal reasons.

Some have lost someone close to them to cancer, others have beaten the dreaded disease or have known someone who did.

Van der Walt explained that the shavathon had been held at Randridge Mall for eight years.

“The important thing we emphasise is ‘Care’ – compassion, awareness, respect and empathy. That is what we strive to achieve with all of the volunteers here today.”

The Honeydew Community Policing Forum also showed their support for the day with many of their members shaving their hair or spraying its bright colours.
