UPDATE: Community saddened by stabbing

BLAIRGOWRIE – Prominent members within the community share their thoughts on the murder of John Bloor.

Following the murder of John Bloor on 22 November, community members respond to the incident with sadness.

“On hearing the news of the incident, I was horrified and very saddened. Such should never happen in any community,” said Ward 102 councillor David Potter.

John Bloor (71) was stabbed to death by suspects who broke into his house and stole various items, such as a laptop and safe, from his home in Blairgowrie.

“The police do not fall under the oversight of the City Council nor does the councillor, as such. The police are an arm of national government, with the provincial government responsible for oversight of the police. Residents need to strengthen their local community policing forum, create community watch groups and the like, many of which I imagine already happen within the Linden police area, due to a strong sense of community,” Potter added.

“In my role as councillor, I will continue to support the community and ensure all matters that relate to local government are addressed. Residents are encouraged to Look and Log, for example, street light faults, illegal use of property and the like, which can affect and be a factor related to crime at a property, in a street or in a suburb. The police will also be engaged with to ensure that they address, where they can, elements of crimes that take place within the ward, region and city,” said Potter.

Bev Boswell of Linden CPF Victim Support Unit said it was a senseless and an unnecessary act, as Bloor had been ill for so long and could not even walk properly.

Boswell who knows Bloor’s wife, Cathie, personally, said she was always very good with security and saved the crime tips and alerts that the unit would send out to its database.

According to Boswell, on the afternoon of 22 November, Cathie did the right thing by reversing into the driveway, which would have made it safer for her to drive away if the suspects had still been in the house.
