Women in Sports talk show celebrates one year on air

FERNDALE – Cynthia Tshaka and Natalie Du Toit steer show into first birthday.

Well known sports broadcaster Cynthia Tshaka and Paralympic gold medalist, Natalie du Toit have steered TV talk show Women in Sports to its first birthday.

Women in Sports is dedicated to issues that women in sports are faced with.

The birthday celebrations were kicked into gear with special guests featuring on the show. National director for Squash SA, Liz Addison, executive member of Cricket SA, Max Jordaan and deputy chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality, Thoko Mpumlwana were some of the guests who featured on the show.

Founder of the show, Tshaka, spoke passionately about the importance of addressing issues that women faced in sport.

“Despite our best efforts to table issues faced by sportswomen in this country, there is still a lot that has to be done to ensure that women in sports are taken just as seriously as their male counterparts,” Tshaka said.

The show has been a dream of Tshaka who expressed her gratitude to SuperSport and South African Breweries for sponsoring the show after she had campaigned for sponsors.

“When Olympic medalist Sunette Viljoen first appeared on the show, she did not have a sponsor but through the show, she got a sponsor and that demonstrates that this show is growing,” she said.

Tshaka pointed out that the media needed to be fair in their coverage of women athletes so that potential sponsors became aware of the talent they have.

Paralympic medalist, Natalie du Toit praised Tshaka for her hard work and dedication that she had for women athletes.

“There has definitely been a shift in discussions regarding women in sports and it’s growing bigger,” Du Toit said.

The show is broadcast on SuperSports 4, Channel 204 at 8pm every Thursday.
