Bowling keeps you Young

HONEYDEW – Sables inter-district team coach, Shirley Young describes the benefits of lawn bowls.

What better way to learn the fun sport of lawn bowls, than from an accomplished coach at your local bowling club?

Sables inter-district team coach, Shirley Young provides free weekly lessons at the Honeydew Bowls Club. Young, who has played for 34 years and coached since 1989, said she enjoys helping new, young bowlers getting started, as well as any other age group.

“Bowls is a wonderful game for people who don’t want to play a contact sport, but still enjoy all the benefits of being active outdoors with friends,” she said. According to Young, an old adage of the sport, ‘play bowls, live longer’ is true, due to the nature of the sport requiring less physical exertion and yielding greater fitness and health benefits.

She encouraged residents who are interested to go and try out the sport.

Editor’s note: It was incorrectly reported in the article, Honeydew comes out tops, that Young is a Springbok coach. Caxton regrets this error and has made corrections on all its print and online platforms.
