HONEYDEW – The annual bowling challenge gives the two clubs an opportunity to compete.

The Honeydew Bowling Club beat the Randburg Bowling Club by a slight margin of three points to win the annual challenge between the clubs, for the second consecutive year.

The exciting challenge was played at the Honeydew club on 15 October with Honeydew clinching the title 72–69. The game was followed by a braai and prize-giving ceremony.

Randburg president, Laurie Stafford said the competition reinforced the good relationship between the clubs. He said the competition was always fierce on the greens but “after the games, we enjoy our braai and socialise and our friendship is growing”.

He predicted that they would reclaim the trophy in next year’s challenge. “It is guaranteed that we will reclaim the trophy next year. They only won by a slight margin,” Stafford said.

Honeydew club’s entertainment manager, Orla Guilfoyle, said this tournament provided an opportunity for these two clubs to compete against each other as they played in separate leagues.

Randburg plays under the Johannesburg Bowls Association while Honeydew competes with other clubs of the Sables Bowling Association.

She said the club was following in the footsteps of Bowls South Africa to encourage young people to participate in the game. “We are also trying to encourage people to join our club and learn that this sport is not for old people only,” she added.

The club also offers free lessons from coach, Shirley Young.

“This is definitely a healthy sport which is not too strenuous. One of our oldest players turns 90 this year and yet he still plays,” she said.
