Randburg police welcome six-year sentence for dagga possession

KENSINGTON B - Randburg police are jubilant after a suspect they arrested received a hefty prison sentence for possession of dagga.

Randburg police have waged a war against drugs in the Randburg area and their hard work is paying off after a suspect was recently sentenced to six years imprisonment for possession of dagga.

Captain Makgowanyana Maja said the suspect, Igechukwu Agu, was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court in Kensington B, for being in possession of dagga and for bribery.

He explained that on 11 October last year, two officers, constable Lebogang Moime and constable Nakampe Mapeti were on duty patrolling Oak Street in Ferndale when they spotted the suspect. They stopped him, as they were performing stop-and-search duties and found dagga in his possession; he was arrested on the spot.

“While being arrested, the suspect tried to negotiate his way out of his arrest by attempting to bribe the police officers who refused to be tempted. He was then detained at the Randburg Police Station holding cells,” Maja said.

“As station management, we would like to thank the members for sticking to the commitment they made when they joined the police service, which is to serve and protect our community and not indulge in any illegal activities.”

Furthermore, he explained that 132 arrests were recently made around the Randburg cluster for various crimes including driving under the influence of liquor, house break-ins, theft, armed robbery and rape, as well as for possession of dagga and illegal drugs.
