Mashaba told to ‘pay back the money’

JOBURG – Alleged DA volunteers march to Mashaba's offices and demand payment for campaigning.

The second council meeting of the City of Johannesburg kicked off on a rough note.

Just before the Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba could deliver his much-awaited acceptance speech, EFF councillor and regional secretary of the party, Silumko Mabona, instructed the mayor to address protesting community members outside. Mabona requested the Council Speaker, Vasco Da Gama to grant a five-minute adjournment to allow the mayor to receive the memorandum from protesters.

“We cannot continue with this session as if everything is hunky-dory. There are community members outside who are here to see the mayor. The DA has abused their black employees during elections.”

The speaker did grant the adjournment, which went way beyond five minutes.

The protesters claim to be DA volunteers who campaigned for the party and were promised incentives for their services but say they have not received a cent to date. According to the protesters, some of whom were dressed in EFF regalia, they were promised they would be paid R50 daily by the DA and a further R150 per day rate between 1 and 3 August.

It seems that the protesters had no written memorandum, as Mashaba walked away from the meeting with nothing in his hands. He, however, has agreed to meet with them (protesters) on 14 August to address their concerns. The EFF has defended their involvement in the matter and said it would defend exploited workers at all levels, regardless of their political affiliation.
