The City of Johannesburg today saw ten new executive members join the “economic hub” of South Africa’s government.
The newly-elected mayor, Herman Mashaba, was sworn in today and made his chosen members of the mayoral committee (MMCs) public, on his 57th birthday.
Two of the ten members are members of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) who joined forces with the DA after the local government elections this year.
All ten MMCs were notified of their new appointments less than an hour before Mashaba made the announcement at a media briefing at Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.
The following people were chosen, according to Mashaba, not for their closeness to the Mayor, or as political paybacks, but rather for their ability to serve the people of Johannesburg:
Meet the new MMCs in the City:
MMC for Finance: Dr Rabelani Dagada
MMC for Economic Development: Sharon Peetz
MMC for Development Planning: Richard Funzela Ngobeni
MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services: Anthony William Still
MMC for Housing: Mzobanzi Ntuli
MMC for Transport: Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba
MMC for Public Safety: Yao-Heng Michael Sun
MMC for Corporate and Shared Services: Dr Valencia Ntombi Khumalo
MMC responsible for Community Development: Nonhlanhla Sifumba
MMC for Health and Social Development: Dr Mpho Phalatse
“The MMCs I have chosen have an abundance of skills and knowledge, experts in their respective fields and people who will take Africa’s commercial hub forward,” said Mashaba.
He added that voters have chosen no single party to hold the majority seats in the City’s council. True to this, two of the MMCs, Ntuli and Makhuba, are members of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
