Bongani runs like the wind

ROBIN HILLS – Robin Hills Primary School pupil finishes first in all his races at a recent athletics meeting.

Robin Hills Primary School pupil, Bongani Maruping (13), has been running like the wind since the age of six. Throughout his schooling years, athletics has always been his favourite sport.

Bongani said he took an interest in athletics because that was his mother’s favourite sport and she excelled when she attended school.

He recently participated in an athletics meeting between Robin Hills, Constantia Kloof Primary School, Crawford Preparatory Sandton and Rivonia Primary  that was hosted at his school on 17 August. The running sensation won first place for all his races. These included: U13 boys 800m, U13 boys relay, U13 mixed relay and the boys champion relay.

“It feels good to have won all my races and I would like to continue running even after I complete school. The most challenging race was the champion relay because it was my last one and my muscles were tired. Rivonia Primary was definitely the toughest competition,” explained Bongani, who trains five times a week at school and at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium.

The school’s head of sports, Royston Sanders, said he is very proud of how the school and Bongani performed. He added that he’s the best runner at the school and always excels in athletics.

Bongani said his mother is very happy and proud of him. He hopes that in the future he will compete in the Olympics like his favourite Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt. “I believe training and my passion for athletics have helped me do well since I’ve been competing in the sport,” concluded Bongani.
