UPDATE: Private developer repairs the pavement

RANDBURG CBD – Private developer repaired the pavement while Joburg Water is still requesting a wayleave to get JRA to repair the same pavement.

A private developer reinstated the pavements and filled the hole on Pretoria Avenue, close to Randburg Square. The pavements were damaged by Joburg Water (JW) while fixing the burst pipe, over a year ago.

The problem persisted for a year, until a private developer stepped in and solved it.

According to Ward 102 Councillor, David Potter, the pavement along the shopping centre on the same street was flooded by water when the pipe burst and was no longer level. City did not do anything to reinstate it to its standard, he said.

Tina White from the Randburg Management District said the pavement was repaired by Vukile Properties.

“They felt they could not wait any longer for the City to do these repairs as they were due to open their new apartment development on top of the Randburg Square building,” she said.

Potter explained that it was unfortunate that the City again failed in its mandate of providing quality service delivery to residents. “JW left it to the private sector to step in and repave what they should have paved. For over a year this pavement was dangerous to pedestrians,” he said.

Meanwhile, JW marketing and communications manager, Tidimalo Chuene, said they had noted concerns regarding the pavement, which quickly came apart after it was put back, following repair of a burst pipe.

“An incident report will be drafted for management to investigate the substandard workmanship that is observed in this instance,” she said.

She concluded that the Randburg depot made another new request for a Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) to fix the area.
